Eastern Cape pilot project aims to improve infrastructure

Village

AHP is in the process of launching a pilot programme in the Eastern Cape province alongside the Department of Health. This project aims to increase the infrastructural capacity of district hospitals in the province - thereby improving the quality of healthcare delivery in these facilities - by hiring three practice managers, one for each district, to act as facilitators.

These practice managers are to provide a link between the hospital, district, and provincial managers, as well as doctors, in order to:

  • correct systematic errors as and when they arise and address all fundamental flaws in the system;Assist doctors where necessary;
  • lend support to an extended ongoing support programme for foreign-qualified AHP doctors placed in the province;Be involved in knowledge sharing;
  • act as a resource to hospital managers to ensure that hospitals function optimally;Assist the hospital with any equipment that needs fixing (these managers each have a small budget for urgent and necessary 'quick fixes');
  • facilitate a mentorship programme for doctors and create access for doctors to a 'peer network' which will offer support and collaboration for doctors;
  • create solutions; and -Ensure that the administrative side of things run more smoothly.

Limont Lehman, project manager for this endeavour explains that the practice managers will also "increase the quality of professional life for doctors" in these areas - the idea being to create sustainable solutions for public healthcare, which can be applied to all provinces in the future. AHP are currently looking to hire these practice managers.
