South Africa voted third friendliest country in the world

Locals

Based on a Forbes analysis of the recently published HSBC Expat Explorer Survey examining the feelings and experience of expatriates living and working in across 100 countries worldwide; South Africa emerged as the third friendliest country and ranked highly in many other fields.

A total of 3385 expatriates were asked questions relating to the economy and their integration into the local community. New Zealand claimed the top position, followed by Australia in second place, South Africa was third, followed by Canada in fourth and the United States took the fifth position. The top three nations were voted the easiest to befriend locals, learn the local language, integrate into the community and fit into a new culture.

The survey was conducted from May to June 2011 and surveyed and ranked 31 countries, those that were statistically significant, i.e. having more than 30 respondents. Respondents rated their host country on a number of different factors relating to economics, raising children and overall experience. To determine which were the friendliest, Forbes isolated the results in four categories: ability to befriend locals, success in learning the local language, capacity for integrating themselves into the community, and ease with which they fit into the new culture.
