Key health issues: 2011 in review

Clipboard

In 2011, there was important progress in a number of areas. Reports published by WHO on Aids, tuberculosis and malaria all indicated fewer deaths – and fewer new infections. The UN General Assembly met to agree on a global agenda for noncommunicable diseases – only the second time (after HIV/Aids) that a health-related theme was selected as the topic for a UN high-level meeting.

These include but are not limited to:

  • Tracking resources and results for women’s and children’s health
  • Reducing harmful alcohol use
  • Immunisation week to vaccinate millions
  • Shortage of midwives endangers the lives of women and newborns
  • Acknowledging the first World Hepatitis Day
  • Combating noncommunicable diseases
  • Social conditions influence health inequities
  • Underfunding tuberculosis risks slowing progress
  • Malaria deaths are down but progress remains fragile
