The hospital was founded by a Scottish Missionary by the name of MacDonald Fraser after whom the hospital was named. The hospital was officially opened on 18 August 1934 with 12 beds, an operating theatre, surgery and dispensary.
Donald Fraser is a 349 bed facility, (283 acute and 66 chronic), with 7 wards which serve a population of approximately 250 000 people in Vhufuli which is 20 km from Thohoyandou. According to the Department of Health; this is a referral hospital for 1 Health Centre and 22 clinics which offer 24 hour services. Most of these services are in the Mutale Municipality. The hospital is busy with an average of more than 5000 OPD (Out Patients Department) visits per month and a bed occupancy rate of 83%.
This facility does weekly outreach services to all our clinics and our CPD activities are accredited.
